Exploring the Benefits of Mealtimes at Happy Days Nurseries & Pre-Schools

At Happy Days Nurseries & Pre-Schools, mealtimes are a meaningful part of the daily routine – supporting not only children’s nutritional needs, but also their independence, social skills, and overall development.

The benefits of mealtimes go far beyond simply serving food. Children across our settings actively take part in the entire mealtime process – from self-serving meals and pouring drinks to handing out plates and washing up. These practical experiences help build life skills, confidence, and a sense of routine and responsibility.

Working closely with expert nutritionists and dietitians, we ensure our menus meet the highest standards to support children’s health and well-being. Our nursery has proudly been awarded the Quality Mark by the Early Years Alliance, recognising our commitment to excellent nutrition practices and our role in supporting children’s long-term health outcomes.

Our trained nursery cooks and chefs prepare fresh, nutritionally balanced meals and snacks every day using seasonal ingredients, all served as part of a rotating four-weekly menu. Fresh drinking water and milk are always available, and dietary requirements, allergies, and preferences are carefully accounted for. We also offer a weaning menu, developed in consultation with families, to support babies as they transition to solid food.

The benefits of mealtimes also tie into our “Where Children Shine” curriculum. Our Let’s Cook! Programme encourages children to explore food through hands-on experiences, including preparing and cooking simple dishes using healthy ingredients. Research shows that when children are involved in food preparation, they are more likely to try and enjoy nutritious meals.

Additionally, our Let’s Grow! Programme provides opportunities for children to sow, tend, and harvest their own produce. This not only supports an appreciation for the environment and sustainability but deepens their understanding of where food comes from—reinforcing healthy eating habits and environmental awareness.

Children are empowered to serve themselves during snack and mealtimes and are encouraged to clean their own plates at our low-level sinks. These routines, supported by attentive staff, promote communication and social development as children share conversations and take responsibility for their environment.

Our nursery kitchens are inspected regularly by Environmental Health departments to ensure food safety compliance, and all staff involved in food preparation have achieved a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.

At Happy Days, the benefits of mealtimes are fully integrated into everyday learning—developing healthy bodies, confident minds, and thoughtful habits for life.

Final Countdown: Just Over a Week Until Rainbow Run 2025! 🌈

Jun 12, 2025

We’re on the home stretch! With just over a week to go until Rainbow Run 2025, excitement is building and today, we proudly represented Happy Days Nurseries & Pre-Schools at the Sponsor Welcome Morning at RAF St Mawgan, where we met fellow supporters and finalised the last logistics for the big day.

We’re delighted to once again be sponsoring the Yellow Paint Station – now for the seventh consecutive year – helping to bring colour, energy and community spirit to this amazing event in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

This year, we’re hoping to top last year’s incredible achievement, where over £110,000 was raised – well above the usual £80,000 target. Every penny goes directly towards providing essential care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Our ongoing partnership with CHSW continues throughout 2025, with fundraising events taking place all year round, from fun days to skydives, and of course, this highlight event of the summer.

“It was a joy to attend the Sponsor Welcome Morning and feel the buzz around Rainbow Run 2025,” said Alice Avery, Digital Marketing Executive. “Happy Days is proud to be part of such a vibrant event that brings people together for a cause that truly matters.”

Alice Merrett, Area Fundraiser at CHSW, added: “We’re so grateful for the continued support of Happy Days Nurseries. Their passion, energy and commitment to this cause shines through every year and we can’t wait to see their yellow station in full swing!”

🌟 Whether you’re running, walking, or cheering from the side lines, you can help us make a difference.

Celebrating Jade’s Journey: Exeter’s Inspirational Team Member

Happy Days Nursery in Exeter is thrilled to share Celebrating Jade’s Journey — a story of dedication, resilience, and passion for early years education that inspires us all.

Jade joined Happy Days Exeter last year as part of the Summer Programme while studying for her BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Plymouth. Despite the challenges of balancing full-time study with part-time work, Jade has excelled in her role, bringing enthusiasm, empathy, and innovative thinking to the nursery’s Outstanding-rated provision.

Originally from South Africa, Jade’s journey into early years education was both unexpected and inspiring. After relocating to England in 2021, she decided to follow her twin sister’s path and enrol in the Early Childhood Studies programme at the University of Plymouth, drawn by the university’s inclusive approach to international students.

During her studies, Jade embraced opportunities beyond the classroom, volunteering with the Royal Navy Family and People Support (RNFPS). This placement, initially part of her degree requirements, became a passion project that continues to motivate her as she volunteers regularly to support the children of service families. This experience, she says, has broadened her understanding of family life and strengthened her commitment to supporting children’s diverse needs.

Jade (right) took inspiration from her twin sister, Chloë McCourt (left), when deciding to study at the University of Plymouth.

Reflecting on her journey, Jade shared that working at Happy Days Nursery Exeter, alongside the guidance of her course tutor Marie Lavelle, has been a key source of inspiration. She credits the nursery’s practitioners for shaping her passion for early years education, highlighting the vital role that dedicated professionals play in nurturing the positive development of children.

With her degree nearing completion, Jade is now preparing to take the next step in her professional journey by applying for a Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work. She hopes this will allow her to build on her knowledge and further support children and families in the community.

At Happy Days Nursery Exeter, the entire team is incredibly proud of Jade’s achievements and the contribution she has made to the nursery. Celebrating Jade’s Journey reminds us that dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to making a difference in children’s lives are what truly matter.

Gemma at Charlton Heights: A Parent’s Review of Our Dedicated Apprentice

A Shoutout for Gemma at Happy Days Nursery Charlton Heights

At Happy Days Nursery & Pre-School in Charlton Heights, we’re passionate about celebrating the incredible team members who help our children shine every day. Today, we’d like to give a well-deserved shoutout to Gemma at Charlton Heights, one of our amazing Explorers Room practitioners.

Gemma joined us when we first opened our doors in June 2023 and is now close to completing her Level 3 Apprenticeship—and she’s thriving. With her warm, caring nature and infectious positivity, she’s become a valued member of our team.

One parent recently shared a heartfelt review that truly captures Gemma at Charlton Heights’s impact:

“It has only recently come to my knowledge that Gemma is an apprentice. My child, who struggled with separation anxiety when she was younger (and still has the odd moment now), found leaving me at nursery hard some days. Gemma has always been amazing with her, and seeing the relationship they share is lovely. We’re always updated well with how she’s getting on, and it’s just so lovely to see how happy she is in nursery now. We’re getting a bit nervous for her transition to the next room up, but I’m sure she’ll be fine (with Gemma’s help). Drop-offs and pick-ups are always a pleasure at nursery. Gemma is fab and has made the whole process easier for both of us.”

We couldn’t be prouder of Gemma and the difference she makes every day. She’s a wonderful example of how apprenticeships build confident, capable professionals who enrich our nursery community.

Jay Holding Flowers He Was Presented With From His Team

Jay Achieves Distinction in Level 7 Strategic Leadership at Happy Days Nurseries & Pre-Schools Saltford

2 mins
Jun 03, 2025

Congratulations to Jay on His Outstanding Achievement!

We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate a fantastic accomplishment by one of our nursery managers, Jay, who has recently completed his Level 7 Strategic Leadership Course with a Distinction—an outstanding achievement that truly deserves recognition. Jay achieves Distinction in Level 7, reflecting his commitment to both personal and professional growth.

Jay completed the course through The Childcare Company (Impact Futures UK) while managing the nursery at Happy Days Saltford. His dedication to continuous learning and leadership in early years education is truly inspiring. In his own words:

“This achievement means so much to me. Personally, it’s helped me believe that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Professionally, it’s given me the confidence to lead my team through any challenge, equipped me with a deeper understanding of leadership, and the skills to explain and guide my team through decisions.”

Balancing a demanding role, studying, and family life—including supporting his six-year-old son who has special educational needs—Jay showed incredible resilience. Jay achieves Distinction in Level 7 thanks to his time management, determination, and the support of his husband and the team around him.

“It was tough at times,” Jay shared. “Working full-time while studying and supporting my son took a lot of late nights and careful planning. But being able to role model to my son that he too can achieve anything really motivated me to do my best.”

Jay’s new skills will help him continue to mentor and empower his team at Happy Days Saltford, supporting them as leaders and practitioners. He’s committed to sharing his knowledge and helping his team understand decisions, roles, and the wider picture of working as part of a growing organisation.

Jay’s journey into early years education is a story of determination and passion. Initially advised against pursuing a legal career, he was inspired to work with children after his nieces and nephews came to live with his family. Despite doubts from others, he pursued early years education with determination—and hasn’t looked back.
As a male in early years, Jay has encountered misconceptions about men in childcare—such as the idea that men aren’t nurturing or that they can’t relate to young children. Jay passionately challenges these assumptions:

“There are so many men who are nurturing, and some children respond really well to male practitioners. Not all men are sporty—I’d rather read a story or do arts and crafts than play football! Early years is about having the right passion and skills to support every child.”

Jay hopes his story will inspire other men to consider a career in early years education:

“We need diversity in early years, and everyone has something valuable to bring. The role is so rewarding, and the more male practitioners join the sector, the more those misconceptions will disappear.”

Since joining Happy Days, Jay has felt fully supported:

“From the moment I had my initial interview, I knew I belonged at Happy Days. I’ve already felt empowered to drive positive change and use my knowledge to make a difference.”

So, what’s next for Jay? Never one to rest on his laurels, he’s already signed up to complete his Level 3 SENCO award! In the longer term, he aims to return to regional work, supporting managers across different Happy Days nurseries—always keeping his passion for working with children at the heart of what he does.

Jay’s advice to anyone thinking of developing their leadership skills is clear:

“Do it! It might feel tough at times, but you’ll come out stronger. We never stop learning, and higher-level qualifications can open so many doors. Above all, do it for yourself, and celebrate your achievements.”

Jay, from all of us at Happy Days Nurseries & Pre-Schools: Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment! Your hard work, passion, and leadership inspire us every day. Jay achieves Distinction in Level 7—and we couldn’t be prouder!
