Men in Childcare: Breaking the Stereotypes
Why are there still so few men in childcare? And how can we challenge the outdated stereotypes that stand in the way?
In this episode of the Happy Days Nursery Podcast, Alice is joined by Jay, a Senior Nursery Manager at Happy Days and passionate advocate for diversity in early years. Together, they explore Jay’s personal journey into childcare, the myths men in the sector still face, and why children benefit from having both male and female role models.
From breaking stereotypes to celebrating the unique impact of male practitioners, this conversation is all about showing that passion, skill, and connection with children matter far more than gender.
If you’ve ever considered a career in early years — or simply want to understand why diversity in childcare makes such a difference — this episode is for you.
Counting Down to Alice’s 15,000 ft Skydive for CHSW!

Aug 12, 2025
With just a few weeks to go until she takes the leap, our Digital Marketing Executive, Alice, is preparing for her 15,000 ft skydive on Saturday 13th September in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
CHSW provides vital care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families across the South West. The charity’s hospices are a lifeline for many, offering respite, palliative care, and a place where families can make precious memories together.
Having grown up just down the road from the hospice, Alice has always been aware of its impact on the community. Since joining Happy Days, she has attended two Rainbow Runs and many Business Club meetings at the hospice, experiences that have given her the motivation to “get up and do it” for such a worthwhile cause.
“I’m really excited for my skydive, but I know that when I look down and can’t see the ground, I’m going to get some major butterflies. Jumping from 15,000 ft is definitely out of my comfort zone, but knowing that every penny raised will go to such an amazing cause makes it all worth it.”
Alice has already raised £295 towards her £500 target, but she’s determined to give her fundraising a final push. To help reach her goal, she’s organised a Charity Tuck Shop in the Happy Days office, selling a range of sweet and savoury snacks.
“I couldn’t be more grateful for all the donations so far,” she added. “I’m excited to do one last big fundraising push and meet that target.”

The inspection praised the setting’s warm, nurturing environment where children are happy, confident, and motivated to explore. Inspectors highlighted the strong bonds between staff and children, the inclusive ethos, and the nursery’s broad curriculum, which helps children thrive and prepares them well for school.
Happy Days Summercourt Retains ‘Good’ Ofsted Rating, with Joint Nursery Managers Sara King and Di Williams expressing pride in their dedicated team.
“We are thrilled to have retained our ‘Good’ rating,” said Sara. “It reflects the passion and hard work our team puts in every day to ensure children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn.”
Di added: “We’re incredibly proud of the relationships we build with families. It’s wonderful to see our inclusive and nurturing approach recognised.”

Mealtimes were also highlighted as a positive part of the day, with children enjoying nutritious food and growing their own produce.
Healthy, active lifestyles with plenty of indoor and outdoor play
Social, collaborative learning experiences
Effective support for children with additional needs

Happy Days Nursery Falmouth Celebrates Continued ‘Good’ Ofsted Rating
Inspectors praised the nursery’s warm and caring ethos, high-quality teaching, and ambitious approach to children’s learning and development. The report recognised the strong bonds between children and staff, highlighting the thoughtful settling-in process that ensures every child gets the best possible start.
The team’s focus on communication, language, and social development was also applauded. Ofsted described the nursery as a place where children are “highly confident and motivated learners”, supported by a team of staff who are “consistently improving” their practice through strong leadership and professional development.
Nursery Manager Kate Bower said: “I’m extremely proud of my team for their ongoing dedication. The report is a real reflection of how hard they work every day to support the amazing children in our care. We’re excited for what’s next here at Falmouth.”
The report also praised the nursery’s inclusive environment, especially its support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as the effective use of funding to benefit disadvantaged children.
Children at Happy Days Falmouth enjoy a wide range of learning experiences, both inside the nursery and out in the local community. From joining in with Falmouth Carnival to taking part in Falmouth Week, these experiences help children develop confidence, creativity, and a respect for diversity.
Staff were also commended for encouraging positive behaviour through the nursery’s “golden rules” and for their strong partnerships with parents. The nursery’s four-month school readiness programme was noted as another strength, helping children transition smoothly into their next stage of learning.
With a focus on safety, wellbeing, and development, Happy Days Falmouth continues to offer a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
